TORONTO, ON (April 27, 2015) – The Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada will debut the newly named “Classic” grid, which includes both Group 70+ and Group 90 cars, at the May 2/3 BEMC Spring Trophy Races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
“With the new race class of Group 90 being added in 2015, VARAC has expanded the eligible age of historic race cars to include the racing period of 1990 to 1994.” says Del Bruce, VARAC’s President and Race Director. “We believe this is a very positive move in response to the interest in newer cars. We hope to see a good number of these cars joining us at BEMC and of course, at the Canadian Historic Grand Prix, June 19-21.”
There are three race events on the VARAC race calendar in May; the BEMC event, to be followed by the Vintage/Historic grid’s season opener on May 22-24 at the Mont Tremblant “Spring Classic”, then on May 30/31 VARAC has added a non-points “Sportsman” race to the schedule, MCO’s new for 2015 Calabogie “May Madness”.
The highlight of VARAC’s season, the Canadian Historic Grand Prix, takes place Father’s Day Weekend, June 19-21 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The event continues to celebrate the history of Canadian motorsport and this year will feature the entire history of Formula Ford, including the Oliver Clubine Memorial race, run groups for all eras of Formula Fords and a special addition, the Toyo Tires F1600 Series at the CHGP as part of their championship schedule.

TORONTO, ON (April 15, 2015) – The Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada isn’t shy about hitting the ground running and this weekend VARAC members will head to the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Driver Development Track to tune-up their historic race cars and seasoned racing skills. With only sunshine and balmy temperatures in the forecast for Sunday, it’s shaping up to be a stellar day after a long, cold, lonely winter.
During the off season many VARAC members have been adding new cars to their stables or refreshing their current rides. “With the new race class of Group 90+ being added in 2015, VARAC is expanding the eligible age of historic race cars to include the racing period of 1990 to 1994.” mentioned Del Bruce, VARAC’s President and Race Director. “We hope to see a number of those cars out testing with us this weekend, and certainly joining us on our upcoming race events and at the Canadian Historic Grand Prix.”
With three race events on the VARAC race calendar alone in May, it’s understandable why members are anxious to get on track and get ready for the season. The newly named “Classic” grid including both Group 70+ and Group 90 cars will be racing at the May 2/3 BEMC Spring Trophy Races at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, followed by the Vintage/Historic grid’s season debut on May 22-24 at the Mont Tremblant Spring Classic. On May 30/31 VARAC has added a non-points “Sportsman” race on the schedule of MCO’s new for 2015 Calabogie May Madness. It’s a full schedule and VARAC can’t wait to get started.

VARAC is the Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada whose members share a desire to preserve, restore and race historically significant cars in a form as close to the original specification as possible. We race cars made in 1989 or earlier in Ontario and Quebec. The highlight of our season is the Canadian Historic Grand Prix held annually in June at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. The 2013 CHGP will feature Porsche.
The VARAC test and tune is coming up soon and we’re hoping to find some new scrutineers for the club. Wouldn’t it be fun to inspect all the beautiful historic cars at the Canadian Historic Grand Prix and find out what’s really under the hood?
Mike Nilson would be doing an introduction to scrutineering and hands on training during the VARAC Test and Tune on April 19, 2015 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, Driver Development Track.
At the end of the day, he will be able to put forward recommendations for issuing a B scrutineering license affiliated with CASC-OR.
Mechanical knowledge would be helpful, but not required. Everything a scrutineer needs to know, can be easily taught.

The Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada (VARAC) is gearing up for what promises to be the biggest, most exciting and best-attended event in its history. The Canadian Historic Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious events on the Vintage and Historic Racing Calendar in North America and it is the largest and most popular event of its kind in Canada and counted as a “Major Spectator Event” at Mosport since 1999.
Racers from across Canada and the United States will descend on Canadian Tire Motorsport Park just north of Bowmanville, Ontario with their Formula Fords, MGs, Triumphs, Jaguars, Porsches, Alfa Romeos, Lotus, Minis, Corvettes and more to challenge the world famous Mosport Grand Prix Circuit. Mosport is one of only three true historic Grand Prix tracks in North America along with Le Circuit Mont Tremblant in Quebec and Watkins Glen in upstate New York. Mosport is an awesome, technically demanding, fast 2.459 mile track with challenging corners and impressive elevation changes. It is the current and former host to world-class racing such as ALMS, the NASCAR Truck Series and the Formula One Grand Prix of Canada, Can-Am, Trans-Am and Formula 5000. Moreover, it is a place for cars, drivers and race fans to come home to.
Open-Wheel Formula Ford Racers will be the “Featured Marque” for 2015 and will compete for the Oliver Clubine Trophy in honour of Ollie Clubine, a champion and pioneer of Canadian Road Racing.
VARAC will step back in time to recreate the epic battles for open wheel supremacy that witnessed the likes of Gilles Villeneuve, Craig Hill, Brian Stewart as well as other world-class drivers like our 2015 Grand Marshal, former Canadian Champion Gary Magwood as they fought their way to even greater heights. One of Canada’s greatest Formula Ford Aces, Gary Magwood will act as Grand Marshall for the weekend. Mosport’s tarmac then as now was the very proving ground that saw Gilles Villeneuve rise from Formula Ford to Formula Atlantic Champion and on to Formula One and more recently, James Hinchcliffe to IndyCars..
VARAC is staging what promises to be the largest ever such contest in its history. In addition to the Formula Ford Feature, racing fans will once again be thrilled to witness a huge grid of swarming, fast Triumphs and MGs piloted by cunning and experienced drivers from across Canada and the US, returning to vie for the claim of victory in the Triumph vs MG Challenge.
In addition, there will be three full days of exciting racing for six groups of cars including Monoposto (single seat open-wheel vintage & historic race cars including Formula Ford Pre ’82), Small Bore Vintage & Historic Cars (under 2000cc), Big Bore Vintage & Historic Cars (over 2000cc), Wings & Slicks (very fast purpose-built racing cars running on slick tires including Formula Ford Pre ’93), G70+ and G90 Cars (cars dating from 1973 to 1994 including all kinds of Alfas, Corvettes, Porsches, Mustangs and a host of others.
The Canadian Historic Grand Prix is about more than on-track racing! Spectators and car enthusiasts of all stripes will enjoy the scope and scale of experiences open to their participation on the weekend such as:
